Friday after work was hectic. Normally don't have football practice but we did Friday thanks to Monday being a holiday and all. Rush home, make sure A gets his football gear on and we rush out the door. Not a minute before but
on the way to football practice, A decides to tell me what happened to him at school. The details are sketchy. He missed school Thursday thanks to vomiting in the bed over night Wednesday, so when he went to school Friday he had makeup work to do. I guess he left said makeup work outside at recess where he had been doing it while others played. Somewhere along the way getting his work from outside and bringing back inside the school, he ran into a metal bar. He didn't even tell his teacher that this happened outside (grrr boys) I don't know how that happened, because a jolt like that would normally make a kid cry. Well, it would make
me cry if I was a 9 year old boy. So when he finally showed me inside his mouth, I see his one front tooth is slightly chipped and the other one was bleeding at the top and looked like it was loose! These are permanent teeth.. GREAT. Now this is on a Friday, when my dentist office is closed and I have never experienced this kind of thing before so I'm freaking out. What the hell am I supposed to do? His tooth isn't hanging out of his mouth or completely out, but he certainly can't play football today. Just putting his mouthguard in made it bleed more and I'm sure a hard hit would knock the thing out. Lovely. At this point I'm upset that no one from the school called. But how could they know if he was by himself? Then I'm mad that it happened when he was by himself and no one saw, and he obviously didn't think in his 9 year old brain that it was important to say anything to his teacher.
After an anxious call to my friend who is a dental hygienist, who suggested I try to find my dentist's home number if it was listed.. it's not (the dentist she works for does this, but he was out of town to even ask advice), or maybe call the local ER and talk to a nurse to see if they knew anyone who could look at it (haha! HA! right.. the female douche answering the phone suggested I use the phone book.. Great. Thanks. Click.) I searched in my phone for Emergency Dentistry in my town. Lo and behold a number finally popped up. The nice sweet HELPFUL lady (thank you, whoever you are) assured me it would probably tighten back up, and if it was going to be a problem, the tooth would turn dark. Just be gentle with it and call your dentist on Monday. Called A's dad to tell him about it, and he had this happen as a kid too, it did turn dark but it healed up fine, so those 2 things made me feel a bit better about it so I could relax over the weekend.
So here we are on Monday, he has been babying his tooth like a good kid all weekend, no football, not even riding his shiny new bike he got for his birthday "just in case". We have an appointment today which isn't even til after school (earliest they could see him). Probably won't be doing football practice again tonight unless we get cleared to practice, and get there in time. But the most important thing is making sure we protect this tooth. I just hope he's not out for the season... we just bought him new football pants and pads :(
